Former USC outside attacker Troy receives Pac-10 Conference Medal honor

July 11, 2011

A men’s volleyball player for the first time in conference history has received a top Pac-10 award.

USC outside attacker Murphy Troy was named a recipient of the 2010-11 Pac-10 Tom Hansen Conference Medal on Monday.

The Conference Medal is an annual award given to a senior male and female athlete from each school in the conference based on the student-athlete’s athletic and academic achievements.

Troy became the first Trojan in more than 10 years to be selected as the AVCA Player of the Year after finishing the season in the nation’s top 15 for aces per game average, kills per game average and attack percentage. USC won the MPSF regular season championship and reached the NCAA Tournament before losing the semifinals.

Troy, who ended his college career in May, was the only men’s volleyball player selected for the Conference Medal from the 10 schools in the Pac-10. Three women’s volleyball players — Paige Weber from Arizona, Carli Lloyd from California and Jill Sawatzky from Oregon State — also received the honor.

The Conference Medal is named after former Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hanson. Hanson was the conference’s commissioner for 26 years before retiring in June 2009.

The 20 Conference Medal winners will be honored in March 2012 at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-12 Breakfast, which is held in conjunction with the Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament.
