Conference tournament men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

April 22, 2011

Consider tonight to be the appetizer for the men’s volleyball postseason.

IPFW and Lewis open the postseason as the lone conference tournament match scheduled tonight. The rest the EIVA, MIVA, and MPSF Tournament quarterfinal matches will be played Saturday.

Check out the conference tournament matches to follow tonight.

MIVA Tournament quarterfinals

No. 4 seed Lewis (19-10, 7-5 MIVA) vs. No. 5 seed IPFW (16-11, 5-7 MIVA)
Match vitals
: 8 p.m. in Romeoville, Ill.
Follow live: Live stats, Online video
Season series: Tied 1-1 (Lewis won in four games in February and IPFW won in four games in April)
What to know: Two First-Team All-MIVA outside attackers will go up against each other in this elimination match. IPFW’s Darryl Shank is in the nation’s top 10 with a 4.02 kills per game average, while Jay Petty led Lewis with a 3.84 kills per game average. The last time these two teams met Petty had a match-high 19 kills and Shank had a team-high 18 kills as the Mastodons won in four games. This will also be the first time since Lewis returned from their NCAA postseason ban five years ago that it will play IPFW in the MIVA Tournament.

Understand the 6PM match two weeks ago so the Christian Coeds could get to their dance\party\social\concert…..but what’s with the (GOOD) Friday Night game?

I think it was worth noting that IPFW and Lewis hadn’t played in a MIVA playoff game since 2004, quite a long time for teams in a very small conference. My question is what additional purpose was there in noting that Lewis was banned from post season play 6 years ago? Not sure what that added to the information other than to draw attention to the past problems of a program that occurred over 7 years ago. Was that worth noting? You could have easily said, ‘This will be the first time the two teams have met in post season play in 7 seasons, when the two teams met in the 2004 MIVA conference quarterfinals.’ I just don’t know why the other approach was taken.
